The K-8 Lakeland School System (LSS) is one of the highest performing school districts in Tennessee with its students scoring in the top 2% of all schools in the state. For the last two years in which data were available, Lakeland School System was ranked #1 in the state in both 3-5 English/Language Arts and 3-5 Math. The Tennessee Department of Education named LSS one of only 12 Exemplary School Districts in the state. The Middle School just recently won middle school design of the year for the state of Tennessee.

LSS currently educates more than 1500 students at two schools, Lakeland Elementary School (K-4) and Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (5-8). The middle school opened in August of 2017 with state of the art technology and the assignment of a Chromebook laptop for every student in the school. Teaching and learning occur in a “digitally converted” environment that is supported by high school quality science labs, a spacious and comfortable library, a “maker space” that allows students to apply concepts to hands on projects, and a full array of fine arts spaces.

Lakeland students in grades 9-12 are currently assigned to Arlington High School through an inter-local agreement. However, Lakeland Prep High School is scheduled to open in 2020.

A recent survey of students at Lakeland Elementary elicited the following comments:

“The teachers are always nice to me. When I am here I feel safe and loved.”

“What I like about my school is they never give up to help me, or another child. They don’t stop. They will not give up until me or another child is educated.”

“The best thing about this school is that it really doesn’t matter who you are — you will get treated with respect and kindness!”
